Making marketing feel manageable again

When Ian Miller of Train Trax got in touch, marketing wasn't broken. It was just slipping and peak season was approaching.

When GrowthBox stepped in, we created a comprehensive marketing plan, built a 90-day content calendar built around key themes, and delivered consistent marketing through the peak retail season without adding to Ian's workload.

On completing the GrowthBox trial, Ian and Train Trax signed up as a GrowthBox client and extended to sister brand The Model Tree Shop - now an ongoing dual engagement.

When Ian Miller first got in touch, marketing at Train Trax hadn't fallen apart. It just kept slipping, and peak retail season was closing in fast.

Train Trax is a specialist retailer serving model railway enthusiasts across the UK, with deep product knowledge, loyal customers, and a constant flow of interesting stock, particularly from Japan. Like a lot of founder-led businesses, the day-to-day never lets up. Stock to manage. Customers to serve. Orders to process. Suppliers to chase.

Marketing happened when there was time. During peak season, there wasn't any.

That's the trap most small business owners recognise immediately. You know marketing needs doing. You're not avoiding it out of laziness or denial. You're avoiding it because every day hands you something more urgent, and marketing never wins that fight on its own.

We started with a trial. No long-term commitment, just a simple aim: take the pressure off and make sure marketing actually happened, consistently, without depending on Ian to find the time.

What Ian needed wasn't theory. He needed something practical. A structure he could trust. Content that reflected what Train Trax customers genuinely care about. And ideally, fewer late-night I should really post something moments.

So that's where we started. We built a straightforward plan, nothing complicated, grounded in solid research into the target audience and the competitor landscape. Clear content themes. A manageable posting rhythm. A focus on new arrivals, FAQs, and modeller guidance. Content that sounded like Train Trax, not like a marketing department had taken over.

Most importantly, we listened. Ian knows his audience better than anyone could brief us on it. Our job wasn't to reinvent Train Trax. It was to translate what Ian already knew into consistent marketing that ran without him.

The shift wasn't dramatic. It was steady. Posts went out regularly. New stock got showcased clearly. FAQs answered questions before they became customer emails. Marketing stopped being reactive and started being intentional.

During peak season, instead of adding to the stress, marketing quietly supported the business. Ian put it better than we could:

"GrowthBox made marketing feel manageable again. The plan was practical, Jim listened to what content we wanted, and it saved me a lot of time during peak."

That word, manageable, is the whole point. It's exactly the gap GrowthBox exists to close: not turning a business into a content engine, but making marketing feel doable again.

Following the trial, Train Trax chose to continue working with GrowthBox and extended the relationship to cover their sister brand, The Model Tree Shop. What began as a short-term way to ease pressure during peak season became an ongoing partnership.

There's a wider lesson here. Most small, specialist retailers don't struggle because they lack ideas. They struggle because they lack time. They know their product inside out and care deeply about their customers, but turning that into structured, consistent marketing takes headspace that's usually already spoken for.

If that sounds like where you are, our free trial is the place to start.
